Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium. The cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. In most of mesothelioma cases, there is history of asbestos exposure. In the United States, more than 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are shortness of breath and pain in the chest. For peritoneal mesothelioma, the symptoms are weight loss and abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever. Mesothelioma is often hard to diagnose.
